Shared on Sat, 07/19/2014 - 16:40How's it hangin', people? I'd love to say I hit the Mega Millions, traveled the world & other fun shit, but that's not how I roll. Figured it was time for an update... it's been a while.
WORK: My Nemesis is vanquished - he left for another job. Now that he's gone, all the hostility I felt toward my job is gone. We have a new Department Director now, and she's amazing. It's also time for our 6-month review, which is looking decent this time around.
HEALTH: I'm actually feeling pretty good. Weight loss is slow, but I'm more consistent in making better food choices (except for the week of my birthday, I gave myself a free pass).
DATING: Yeah, I retired from that shit. As I put myself out there, I had a revelation. The truly good (single) American women are already taken, or they don't live in Illinois. Besides, between work & hobbies & family, I'm good. My life's not lacking; at least, I don't feel that it is, and that's the important thing.
OTHER STUFF: Fourth of July weekend, I went to Columbus, OH to visit some long-time gaming friends. It was a great little getaway, especially coming off of helping with a memorial for a coworker that passed away. I saw one of the most impressive fireworks displays I've ever seen, and got to see the Columbus Zoo. And something that's no big deal to you guys (but kinda one to me) - I helped my buddy change his brake pads & rotors. Since I could never drive, I never saw the point in picking up any automotive mechanical knowledge. But it was pretty cool.... and now, when I look at working on brakes in Forza, things make a little more sense.
So, I wanted to get everyone's opinion on something. Some of you have known me for a while - and even if not, there is no one here whose opinion I don't respect. So, a few weeks ago, I stopped Podcasting. In a nutshell, I teamed back up with Jackson to revive Geeks On The Mic, and he went batshit crazy after some listener feedback that preferred my offerings and style above his. The "professional" couldn't stand to be shown up by a rookie, so he scrapped everything. Anyway, I took a few weeks off for my birthday & family affairs, but now I'm looking to jump back in the saddle & do something. I'm just not sure what. I could easily start up a Podcast - I have the equipment, a buddy committing to co-host (but keep me in charge so I don't get fucked over), all that. But I kinda want to try something different, like a YouTube channel. I want to do reviews, let's play videos, that kind of thing. But then, I also want to try my hand at making indie games. I bought RPG Maker VX Ace during the Steam Summer Sale, and I've been messing around with it - and making a game has always been an unspoken passion of mine (I didn't want to get my hopes up since I couldn't afford the schooling). But there it is. What I'm hoping is, you guys can help direct me in the path I should go. Do I...
Podcast?
YouTube channel?
Make an indie RPG?
Or, take a break, do nothing, and just enjoy life?
I'll leave it at that for now. I have to get back to doing some work.

Hey Jedi,
It was always my dream to be a game developer but after $50,000 worth of education that I can't afford to pay back, I discovered that I didn't like it, oops. Don't mistake my story for an attempt to discourage your dream, but it's a horrible industry that grinds folks down. Most of my professors were game industry burn outs and they were some of the most unenthusiastic developers and programmers that I have ever seen. You seem to have a natural talent for podcasting and you already have the equipment. YouTube channels cost nothing and folks are always searching for gameplay vids and reviews: why not do both? I have a full time job, a YouTube channel, a couple of writing gigs, and I'm a full time gamer...but I'm also on the brink of a sleep-deprived homicidal rampage. All that any of these projects really require is desire and aptitude: if you can apply those two criteria to any or all of your choices then you're a lucky man and should do whichever makes you the happiest. Personally, I'd like to play your game and see somebody prove the bastards wrong, but that's just me. Aging gamers may not be the best resource for vocational advice.

My opinion.
Do all Three, if you have the time of course.Seems like you have the passion for it.
I have RPG Maker as well and it seems straight forward enough, it just takes time.
Clickteam Fusion is also on steam and is very good to mess around in.I have learned a lot in the last few months with it.
Anyway I`ll buy your game if you make it, or anyones from this site for that matter.

Thanks for the input, guys. It's good to hear from guys who actually have a clue (as opposed to some of my friends who are like, "Do whatever you want, dude"). Jones, I may be joining you in that sleep-deprived homicidal rampage, because I'll be doing all three. Shamrogue, I do have the time - I just need to ration it out. I'll make another blog post soon outlining my evil plan, but I feel like I'm waking back up. :) And thanks for the encouragement on the game. I'll post development updates once I get started on it, and you guys will definitely get to play it.... shit, I'll even need a beta-tester or two. ;)
