<Continued from Part 1>

The HAVA Platinum HD works great with the XBOX to record my game playing, just look at the quality:  www.youtube.com/watch , but there was still things I needed to work out, right away I ran into some recording issues partly because of my unusual setup.

I have a Netgear router hacked with DD-WRT that acts as an xbox wireless adapter. With the HAVA connected to my router I would get tremendous lag on Xbox while I was trying to record on my wireless laptop. Apparently the amount of data being sent over the wireless (xbox->wireless->router->internet and HAVA->router->wireless->laptop) appeared to overwhelm the router. Maybe it was the hacked router that was the bottleneck, maybe it was my main router, I could never figure it out so I had to take another tack. YMMV.

I used a crossover cable to connect the HAVA directly to the unused ethernet port in my laptop. I followed the official instructions on the myhava.com forums on how to do that and the HAVA connected just fine. But then I discovered that I was unable to access the internet from my laptop at the same time. Accessing the internet was important as I wanted to start uploading the video to youtube as soon as I finished a match since it took about 90 minutes for a 600MB (typical size of a 10 min COD HC TDM match)  upload to finish.

I finally figured out what to do and posted the following to the forums at myhava.com:

1) Give your ethernet connection an IP like 192.168.1.xxx. To be on the safe side, make XXX to be any number between 140-200 and leave the default gateway blank. Although the official instructions tell you to, DO NOT set the default gateway to 192.168.1.226 (that is the actual IP of the HAVA device)!!!
2)Set your wireless connection to use Internet Connection Sharing.
3) Turn off your wireless connection. I have a glowing blue button on the front of my laptop that turns the wireless adapter on and off.
4)Plug in your crossover cable and wait about 15 seconds.
5)Start the HAVA player. It should connect with no problem. If not, you may have to run the HAVA setup program.
6) Turn on your wireless adapter. After about 30 seconds, you should be able to open a browser and find you are not only using the HAVA but you're on the Internet!

Now anytime I want to use my HAVA and the internet at the same time, all I have to do is turn off my wireless adapter, plug in the crossover cable, start the HAVA player and then turn on the wireless adapter.

Next up: solving the issue of accessing network drives on my internal LAN.
