Shared on Mon, 07/26/2010 - 01:09Today I go to start my 89 Mustang to take it to WalMart and get new front tires. On Friday the car started handling really,really poorly and I discovered that the tread was separating from the front driver side tire. I figured on having to spend about $200 for new front tires....
And my key doesn't work. It just won't turn. I try a different set of keys and same thing. It was as if someone had changed the lock overnight! After doing a little internet research it turns out that ignition lock cylinders simply wear out. The pins in the lock get so worn, they eventually don't match the key template so the lock refuses to turn.
A little more research into replacing an ignition lock cylinder shows that it's a simple $20 fix.....IF THE FUCKING KEY WORKS! Remove the plastic housing, turn the key to ACC, press the anti-theft cylinder with a small screwdriver and it slides right out. Otherwise the car thinks you are stealing it and you have to overcome the anti-theft measure.
My choice was to call a locksmith and pay big $$ for a Sunday visit or attempt to defeat the anti-theft hardened steel cylinder by drilling it out.
I drill and drill and drill and nothing, the fucking thing still stays locked in there. I really hope I didn't damage the steering column or something and this turns into a big $$ fix....
So now I get to call a locksmith and hope he doesn't ream me on the cost.
