I'm a big horror movie fan. So I'm always looking for good ones. Here's a few I recently saw.
1. The Last Exorcism – I really liked the original Exorcist, plus all its sequels. The whole good vs. evil supernatural thing is always enjoyable. This movie puts a new spin on it, by doing a documentary "Blair Witch" style, where our main protagonist is a disillusioned charismatic preacher who is out to expose the fraud of exorcism. At the same time, he is conflicted by the need for money for health care for his son, and forced to perpetuate the hoax a few more times. The results are not quite what you'd expect. And although the ending I'm not sure about, the whole movie was still really enjoyable. Recommended.
2. Children of Men – Okay so this isn't technically a horror movie. But it shows such a stark, bleak, depressing view of humanity's future that it almost ranks as one. Even the semi-hopeful ending did nothing to dispel the darkness of the rest of the film, in my opinion. After all, who cares about saving the human race? – at least as humans are depicted in this movie. I really did not like it. A waste of 2 hours.
3. Saw: The Final Chapter (a.k.a. Saw 7) – I'm a big Saw fan, having seen all the other movies. What can I say about this one? It wraps it all up nicely, leaving only a few very tiny loose ends. It was also nice to see the return of Cary Elwes as Dr. Gordon, and no it wasn't a flashback! Tobin Bell even shows up, with electrifying screen presence, as always. The "torture porn" aspect of this movie is annoying, considering that 99.9% of the women killed in this movie also happen to be hot babes. I don't get that, myself. But other than that, it's a great movie. Oh, and the 3D part? Unnecessary.
4. The Broken – A nice little movie staring Lena Headley. It deals with doppelgangers killing the originals. It is very moody and slow paced, which I liked but is not for everyone. It was interesting to see London onscreen. The only thing I didn't like was the coloring. Does every horror movie have to be filmed with a blue lens filter these days? That's starting to become a little clichéd.
5. The Butterfly Effect – Again, not so sure that this qualifies as Horror per se, but it so depressing, so full of suffering, unpleasant people that it well could rank as one. I really liked this movie though. Despite the fact that everyone in it is so hateful and obnoxious, the premise itself – that of changing your past and eliminating your regrets – is so original and cool that it makes up for any other shortcomings. Plus the movies keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. Against my own will, I found myself liking Ashton Kutcher. He does a good acting job here. Then again, if you are like me, then you would like to see pretty-boy Ashton suffer for stealing Demi away from Bruce. And boy does he suffer in this movie – sheesh! So in that way this movie works on two levels, for both the Ashton lovers and haters. (Oh and for the record - prostitutes probably don't look like they could be an extra for Dawn of the Dead. Just sayin'.)
6. Leprechaun 4: In Space – This is far and away the WORST movie I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of movies. I could hardly even bring myself to finish it, it's that bad. I like Warwick Davis, but this movie is so horrendous it practically defies description. The plot makes no sense at all. The dialogue is atrocious. The worst about this movie is that it doesn't fall into the "so bad it's good" category. It's just... BAD. Still, it does have some boobs revealed at one point. So I guess it's not a total loss.
This is what happens when I don't have an Xbox all week. I end up writing. Loads and loads of meaningless drivel. I need to go back to working on my novel. Now there's one dream I could some day pin down maybe!
