 About a month and a half ago, my dad got a call from a parent at the highschool we both coached ice hockey at years ago. It was the local private catholic high school. He was the varsity head coach starting in 1982 and coached there for 18 yrs. I started palying for the team the following year and graduated in 1990. When i was done playing, I came back and joined the team as a coach. We won three state titles from 93-96 and had a group of superstars coming up.

I had started coaching this group as the head coach of the freshman team, and then moved with them to the jv team. Problems arose when those boys moved to the varsity team. One of the fathers wanted to coach. He with the help of a few other parents (including a prominant state politician) all with bottomless pockets had my dad fired. One of the politicians sons came to me and told me about the plan. I talked to my dad and we had the meeting stopped, he went out of town three days later, and they did it while he was gone.

The only thing I found funny about the whole situation was the dad that wanted to coach and paid 5,000 as a "donation" to get it got double crossed. They were planning on asking me to coach the team. Of course when they did, I had quite a few choice words for them and declined. He still ended up with the job, but knew he'd been fooled. I have mixed feelings on the fact that the team didn't even make the playoff the year they clearly had more talent than any other team. They self imploded on egos, attitudes, and bad coaching on and off the ice.

When the current parent called, he asked my dad if we were interested in coaching again. He declined, but said he couldn't speak for me. I talked to them on the phone, and they decided to meet with me. I first met with the president for a small interview two weeks ago. Then on Tuesday and Wendsday night this week, the entire board met and interviewed the three applicants they accepted. I was the only one with no former varsity head coaching experince. My resume is a mile long though. I've been involved quite exstensively for 30 years. 12 yrs playing, 16 yrs refereeing, 17 yrs of coaching, 7 yrs administration, 6 yrs scheduling, 2 yrs tournament directon, 3 yrs chief of coaching. My disadvantage was the other two having varsity head coach experience, and they were friends with some of the board members and parents.

To my surprise, they unanimously voted for me. I meet with the school board Monday morning to interview for school approval.
