Shared on Tue, 01/18/2011 - 20:38Today was a Retro Day for me in several ways. First the mail. I came home from work today to find two packages waiting for me. The first was from my friend Golden Ax over at Atari Age. For those of you unfamiliar with Atari Age, it is a site dedicated to classic Atari consoles and pretty much all other retro & classic video games from Atari, Sega, Nintendo, ColecoVision, Intellivsion and more. They even have a coin-op arcade section of the forums.
So Ax runs a vintage video game business and tends to collect tons of random shit that pile up around his home and shop. In an effort to clear out some of the clutter and avoid being featured in an upcoming episode of Horders, he decided to run a little drawing. Participants would pony up $16.25 and Ax would send out a box of random video game gear and retro memorabilia. One lucky participant would receive a box containing $100 worth of gear. Everyone else would get a random assortment. One "lucky" person would also get a can of corn (Ax has an odd sense of humor). Being someone who loves both retro gear and surprises, I decided to join in the fun. Here is a video of me unboxing Ax's delivery today.

Also in the mail today was this little gem.
Despite recent high prices resulting from the release of TRON Legacy, I was able to score this copy of the original TRON on VHS for $15 shipped on eBay to add to my collection of memorabilia. I also have the DVD copy coming this week from a local CL add for a mere $12 shipped. Not bad considering the DVD's are selling for upwards of $50 on FeeBay these days.
TRON Tuesday
Speaking of TRON, check out OmegaMaximus' TRON Tuesday update on the TRON-themed modded XBox 360 that he is building for our Gamers Gone Wild event during PAXEast. He has created a lit stand that looks pretty damn cool. I cannot wait to see the Recognizer, which he has said is nearly 3' in height.
Out With the Old
One more Retro-related note. This week I said a bittersweat farewell to my SMASH TV arcade Cab. This was one of my "Must Have" games when I started collecting and actually the second SMASH TV that I have owned so far (the first was a converted cab and not the dedicated version that you see below). This cab was purchased by a new member of the NEACF crew that consists of fellow arcade and coin-op collectors in New England. The money that I received for this game was put to good use. I have a Sinistar cab on the way that should be delivered this weekend. Stay tuned for pics and a video of the gameplay once it arrives.
