DaVinci Code

Went and saw DaVinci Code today.  As usual, the movie cannot hold a candle to the book.  Whats worse is that its clear Ron Howard thinks everyone who goes to see the movie has already read the book, because they do a terrible job of explaining some rather key concepts.  Since my wife had not read the book, our walk out afterwards and the drive home was filled with me explaining things that just werent handled well in the movie.

Now, since I DID read the book, I did get some enjoyment out of the movie because I could just watch the action without trying to figure out WHY the action was ocurring.  Now, when it comes to my opinion of the books topic, let me just say that, after careful consideration, Ive found that anyone who has a strong opinion one way or the other gets a heck of a lot of hate mail, so I aint sayin!  I will just say that the book did push me to do a bit of my own research, and that cant be all bad.

Some friends of ours are both very religious, which I respect tremendously.  They are Christian (as am I) and they were distressed to learn that we were going to see DaVinci Code.  I used my usual argument that my beliefs are my own, and no movie would change them one way or the other, but, they just feel the entire main point of the book is evil.  I dont suppose I helped my case with them by saying that the only thing that would be more evil than the book was if the book was right.  Damn me and my logical approach to things!

Anyway, if you read the book, you certainly wont glean anything new from the movie.  If you didnt read the book, but intend to see the movie, I suggest you brush up on the Knights Templar, the Priory of Scion and Opus Dei, because the movie wont give you nearly enough on any of those topics to really grasp the significance of the plot points.

It is absurd about how people are getting so upset over a fictional story. Fic-tion-al. My wife decided to not go see it because of lukewarm reviews. We have read the book and once you take out the mystery, theres not much left to the story.

Yes, I agree. I was stunned how early in the movie they revealed the "secret" behind the grail. The movie simply could not run through all the clues the book did, which was the part of the book I enjoyed most.

I think Im going to see this today...since I heard XMen was terrible. This is my way of avoiding reading the book (everyone has told me to read it, but frankly I have no interest). Thank you for the review Monkey.

If youre interested, check out Josh McDowells book "The Da Vinci Code: A Quest For Answers." He helps clear up some innacuracies and delve further into the various groups represented in the movie.
