A Modern day Hermit

So I was a hermit today.  Not by design, but, as I reflect upon the day, it sure worked out that way.  Now a dictionary definition of a hermit is: any person living in seclusion; recluse.  However, I'm stretching that a bit to say someone with little or no human contact.  Let's examine my day today.

I got up and was out the door before my wife woke up.  I drove in alone, road the elevator up alone (although I did say good morning to the guard and got a vague wave in return).  About 3 weeks ago, they moved the department that was on my floor to another floor.  That leaves a sum total of 8 of us on my entire floor. My building is roughly 250' X 250'. so that leaves 8 of us in around 63,000 square feet.  Plenty of elbow room.  I do actually have someone who sits next to me, but she was off today.  The next closet person can't be less than 150 feet away.  No real human contact yet.  Of the eight people on my floor, 6 are women, so it's a slim chance I would happen to run into the only other guy in the restroom, and I did not, nor did I happen to see any of the women.

I was exceedlingly busy today as I am doing my own work plus filling in for my boss this week.  However, completely unexplicably, I had not one single conference call today.  Plenty of e-mail and way too many PMs, but no actual conversation all day.  After work, I stopped at the grocery store, where I used the self check-out and spoke to no one.  Ditto at the gas station.

When I got home, my wife was at the neighbors and I had almost an hour to myself.  So there, a day at the office, stops at the grocery store and the gas station, and still I was a hermit.

What will tomorrow bring?

Don't worry about it. I like living like this, actually. The less people you speak, the less bother. That's not to say I'm anti-social, I just hate to be a testdummy for someone's next lie about his or her life, or somebody else's. If you clock enough "hermit"-days, you'll come to apreciate them eventually. :D
