A National Championship, sort of........

Disclaimer up front: I bleed Scarlet and Grey and hang up buckeyes instead of mistletoe at Christmas.

Did the BCS "work" this year? It's very difficult to say. Once USC was out, I wanted a rematch with Michigan. Instead, we get Florida. Can I argue it, sure. But, I could have argued against Michigan getting it too (and DID, until USC lost).

I have been mostly amused at the various sportscasters all day. I listen to ESPNRadio all day, so it was mostly National Sportscasters I was listening to. Some feel MI is only out because voters did not want a re-match. Others feel MI is out because they did not win their conference.

However, I thought the best question was asked by Erik Kuselias this afternoon. He asked, "If you had to send two teams over to Russia to play against their two best teams, who would you send?" Now, it was a little odd because I don't think they PLAY college football in Russia, but, you get what he meant. I think most people who are not Gators fans would say OSU and MI.

What is it about Florida that makes most of us think they simply aren't as good as MI? Many of the vital stats you can use to examine a football team give the nod to the Gators. If you go by who they beat, rather than by who they lost to, then the Gators come out on top.

I dunno. i thnk the average fan loves the idea of a sequel, and the average sportscaster or college coach hates it. However, the final BCS score was so close, that even that is a bit hard to prove.

The part I am really unsure of is the fact that Coach Tressel did not cast his vote. Most of the National media has blasted him for that, and I can understand why. However, I think he would have been blasted if he had voted too - either way. If he votes MI, he'd be accused of wanting to keep it in the Big Ten and of "admitting" that the SEC is a better conference and more to be feared. If he voted for the Gators, he would have been accused of being afraid of MI and what they might do in a rematch. I dunno. I guess I have so much faith in Tressel that I just trust his decisions - comes with being a fan I suppose.

It's rare that the BCS gets it 100% right, why should this year be any different? Oh well, at least we know OSU deserves to be in the game. Now let's see if we can cram those gators so full of buckeyes they choke!

Go bucks!

I have watched almost all of the OSU games this year and do believe they should be #1 in the polls. The only way to properly come up with #1 in the nation is to do it on the battlefield. THE ONLY TRUE WAY! How can every sport except NCAAF have it wrong? You said that statiscally Florida should be #2. So then what is your reason they should not? I love the SEC but am not a Gator fan but they deserve to be there. They played the toughest schedule, not just in their conference but in the nation and only lost one game to the "at the time" #4 team. How many top ten teams did Michigan beat and their opponents beat? I am just going to stay pissed until the playoff system comes.

I think the argument most make for MI is that they almost beat the one team pretty much everyone agrees IS the #1 team. That is MI's best claim to a title shot. Otherwise, FLA has the better season-long resume. But, that one point for MI is a damn strong one.

counter: whose to say that if OSU plays Fla in regular season, Fla wins or loses by one point? That alone is not even close to be good enough reason to be #2. Illinois only lost by 7 pts. Does that mean Illinois should be in the top 20, 10, or even 5 based on that score? Of course not.

There is no answer to this. The voters have voted, the computers have computed, and FLA is the foe. Florida's Strength of Schedule is actually in the high teens, low 20's, so not sure it's safe to say they played the toughest schedule in the nation. As for Illinois, they certainly lost more than one game, so, not sure I see the analogy as valid. But, had they been 11-1 and their lone loss had been to OSU by 7 points, they would quite possibly be in the top ten or higher, since they would have beaten both WI and MI to have that record, and their loss to OSU would have been in the middle of the season. If you can agree with this point, then you can see why many thought MI would be ranked #2 and get a re-match. But, all that aside, I definitely cannot make an absolute case for why either team should be ranked #2. Fortunately, I don't have to. It's already decided.
