Who turns down a promotion?

Only a fool, right?  Time to give me my pointed cap.  For I did exactly that today - turned down a promotion.

"But why, monkee, why?  You have stated in many posts that you are more intelligent than fungus, and yet...."

Yes, I admit, it looks foolish.  Let me make it look even more so.  This was a promotion into the organization that pretty much everyone is trying to get into.  The "up and coming" workgroup, so to speak.  And, they approached me, not the other way around.  Most of the poeple who joined this new group a year ago have already been promoted yet again.

So, let's look at the downside.  I know 3 people who work for that org - that's part of why I was recruited.  However, all of them work, on average, 10-15 hours more a week than I do.  Since we're salary, the amount of hours we work does not change our pay.  But, more to the point, the "extra" hours they typically work are after I normally leave.  The 2-3 hours after I get home are often the only time I see my wife.  We both have many outside activities, and she helps her mom and sister a lot, so, our "quality" time is after dinner and weekends.  Well, of those 3 people I know, 2 of them work most weekends as well.

So, I chose time at home over advancing at work.  Time will tell if this was a smart decision or a bad one.  But, I feel very comfortable with my decision.

My clan will be disappinted to learn that I will NOT have extra moeny to divert into the 360 fund.  Looks like it's still next year for monkee.

Time for this low-level drone to sign off.  Peace.

For what its worth I think you made a very smart decision. Money is not the most important thing in life.

There is a quote that hangs on the wall of my cube. It says "Man must choose whether to be rich in things, or the freedom to use them." It used to hang on the wall of my office, but I traded down, and am happier for it. You can probably tell that I agree with your decision.

Probably a good decision. I have always regretted the time I spent while my kids were growing up working a second a job (consulting). I worked from home, but it was still work and I missed a lot of opportunities to have a better life with them, and probably even more important, my wife! Good luck!

I was a Sr. Vice President before and made sick money. However, I worked 65-75 hours a week. It took me losing my job to figure out that I never want to be there again. It is not worth it. Good for you Monkee.

Always choose quality time with your loved ones over money. The money is just worthless if you don't get to spend time with the people you love. Your instincts steered you well monkee, bravo. In my "career" I have made similar decisions that put my family and my freetime in front of my job advancement. I have never regretted those decisions. Nobody of consequence gets to the end of their life and says "I wish I had made more money", it's always "I wish I had spent more time with my family". I see guys in my office every day that are killing themselves to get ahead, but they don't really have anything of value. They can have the corner office as far as I'm concerned. I'll take my 40 hours and get back to my real life, thank you very much.

Yep, Crane (and all), I'm with ya. That's really what it came down to. The most valuable thing in the world is time. My wife and I actually discussed what dollar amount might make me want to take it anyway. But, after about 10 minutes of that discussion, we realized that there was no amount that was really worth it (Well, OK, double my salary would have been worth it since I could have retired about 10 years sooner! But, no way that was happening). I know I will get promoted within my own org in the next year or two. And, I'll be able to do it with pretty much the same hours I work now (maybe a little more, but not a lot). I already felt pretty good about this decision. Thanks for making me feel even better!

Good decision Monkee! A healthy marriage can weather any storm but jobs come and go.
