Basic problem solving

Here is the problem statement: Farms are having difficulties when they hire illegal immigrants in that if there is a chance of an INS raid, the workers do not come to work for fear of being deported. This causes a drop in productivity and ultimately profitability for the farm.

* My Solution: Quit hiring illegal immigrants. Do more thorough checks on the documentation provided by your employees and make sure that they are legally allowed to work in the United States before you hire them.

* Alternate Solution: Do not allow immigration raids. Create a 'safe harbor' area where illegal immigrants can come and work without the fear of being rounded up and deported.

Perhaps it's just me, but I think that it is going to be very difficult to find a solution to our immigration challenges in the United States when he have whole municipalities that are prepared to go on record as defying Federal law.

Wouldn't it make more sense to just, umm, catch them, issue them a temp work permit and then, err, tax them? Maybe I'm just jaded, but the easiest way for a government to curb something is to legislate it and then tax it. Sure, it bypasses all the silly immigration quotas and shit, but they're there anyway, and you can't keep'em out, so why waste money trying? It's like trying to save water with chewing gum over a leak, when you could just put a bucket under it and reuse the damn water. Illegal immigrants are at worst, an untapped taxable income. Just my thought.

People just like to bitch and bitch and bitch. Its all the illegals fault. Its all the farmers fault. Its not my fault that I bought the strawberies from wal-mart because they are 25 cents cheaper than Albersons. Albersons should just figure out a better way to produce strawberries with legal workers at a legal wage for the same price as the guy who hires the illegals. My point is, that you can make all the laws you want, but until the public at large starts voting at the cash register its all smoke and mirrors.

It's a tough situation. The family of a friend of mine owns a farm and she says that on the farm, mexican help is far, far more reliable than 'gringo' help. Seems the gringos almost always will work for a few days and then decide they need to go find something else, whereas workers from mexico need the work more and stick around and try to keep their jobs. I used to think it was a cut-and-dried issue like in your post, but when you actually see how it works it's not so easy.

I am not at all against people coming here from other lands to work hard and try to make a better life for themselves and their families. I personally think America always has room for people like that. I also think it is the apex of hypocrisy for people that have managed to get a foothold here to try and make the wall behind them higher so others cannot enjoy the same benefits as they. That being said, illegal is illegal. To ask your city government to protect you so you can break the law seems to me jaded and perverse.

I love Ryan's point. I was watching Bill Oreilly, my father likes to watch him, last month and he had Vicente Fox on his show. Bill was criticizing Vicente Fox that the Mexican government that they never did anything or simply not enough on fighting drug trafficking in their country. The funny thing is, is that Americans consume nearly 85% of the world's cocaine and Mexico is just a pit stop for the drug before it reaches it's final destination. So Mexico needs to relocate millions of dollars to try to stop drugs that are heading towards the US? Then you have celebrity teenagers driving drunk and using cocaine just receiving jail sentences of only 10 minutes.

Agreed, the 'safe haven' idea is a joke under the current system (is that link correct btw?). But 'ship 'em all back home' won't work either--this coming from a guy who used to feel that way until he learned a bit about the situation.

Either it is illegal - and should be enforced - or it's not. If the government wants to change their stance, then they should change the laws. and ZomG! Zikan posted a Bl-Zog!
