GT6 - is it any good?

As the title asks? Having never owned a playstation since the 1st one( what was that late 50s??) is GT6 worth picking one up for? Or should i stick with what i know and FM4?

Oh is that all? The real short answer is yes. The short answer is if you like FM4 you should like GT6...Parcells did although it was GT5 at the time and GT6 certainly seems to be an improvement over GT5 albeit no signifcant upgrades. Some say the physics are a bit better in GT6 but I haven't really noticed too much...both 5 anf 6 are great and IMO just slightly better than FM4 physics. The overall single player game options of FM4 are clearly better than GT6 and while FM4 has some neat on-line options that GT6 does not GT6 also has many options FM4 does not and since GT6 has opened up some cool on-line options that GT5 did not have I give the slight edge to GT6 over FM4 with on-line play.

Whether it is worth it for you I certainly cannot answer but I can tell you I never played and GT games prior to GT5 (played all Forza's) but I bought a PS3 specifically for GT5 and up until two weeks ago when I put in the GT6 disc GT5 was the only game I ever played on PS3 and I have zero regrets. Knowing what I know now it would have been a mistake to not buy a new PS3 and GT5 a few years ago.

Yes.  I bought GT5 in November 2010 on launch day and played it hundreds of hours in the three years since.  It is my favorite video game of all time, period, although GT6 likely will take that crown since it is largely an improved GT5.  The graphics are better than GT5, particularly the lighting effects, and yes, they do rival Forza 5 IMO (I have Forza 5 and GT6 and so I am in a position to firsthand evaluate the features of both titles).  The FFB and physics are incredible, definitely a step up from GT5 and they rival PC sims, such as rFactor 2, Assetto Corsa and iRacing, all of which I also have.  The economy was broken until last week.  If you just play GT6, and unless they introduce big paying seasonal events like GT5 had starting a few months after launch, I am not sure how you could reasonably get enough $$$$ in the game to acquire the 1200+ cars that are available for purchase in the dealership.  There is a well-publicized glitch, however, that has changed all that and basically you can now get any and all cars that you want.  I upped my garage to over 150 cars over the weekend, which is more than plenty to jumpstart my career mode racing and allow me to play the game the way I want.  The sounds are hit or miss, some are great, some suck.  The track selection is downright amazing, with more to come via DLC.  The car selection is similarly top notch, again with more to come via DLC.

The only significant downside for me is the lack of a multi-monitor mode, like we got in GT5 via a patch a few months after launch.  That being said, I am confident that is going to be added within the next few months.  Jordan at GTPlanet confirmed this feature in a discussion with a member of the PD development team.

Buy with big time confidence!

For me, it comes down to what you value in a game so I'll try to break it down this way IMO

Do you like to paint your cars? - GT6 does not offer a livery editor nor does it look like there are any plan to add it.  You can apply single color paints but there are a number of options for the paints (even though it does cost 5000 credits to paint your car).  For this, I give FM the advantage

Do you like to build and tune your cars? Both offer options to build up your cars and there are a number of different ways to to accomplish what you are looking for in both games.  Having spent a couple weeks now with GT6, I think I still prefer FM over GT6 in this aspect.  In FM4 (and I assume it remains in FM5, you tune your car to the tires you plan to use to attain a certain Class. Also, parts like clutch, transmissions, drive shaft play an impact in your class number you are shooting for,  In GT6, tires have no impact on the PP rating and neither does the extra parts.  It seems that only Power and Body Options (weight reduction) are the only things that impact PP.  Funny thing is an oil change impacts your PP value.  That said, if you find yourself in a race and your car is slightly over the PP limit, you can quickly add either ballest weight or reduce your power percentage very easily (in lobby or before the race starts.  Really nice feature. That said, I think I still prefer the tuning/build options in FM but very close

Track variety - without a doubt, this goes to GT6 hands down.  So many track to race on and all so far seem challenging so if you are looking to just race in different locations, GT6 is it!

Car variety - Dont let the 1200+ cars fool you in GT6.  there are a large number of varieties of the same car (there must be 15-20 different versions of the Miata.  This is especially true in the Asian cars it seems.  That said, I still give the nod to GT6 especially in the actual race cars.

Graphics - FM5 especially (from what I have seen) has stunning graphics and are hands down better than GT6/FM4. however when comparing FM4 and GT6, I'm going with GT6,  yes the trees and some of the surroundings are a bit 2D in GT6.  That said, we you are actually racing, the sceneriy/locations really add to the atmosphere and when you can add in night and weather changes, the nod goes to GT6 over FM4 only.

Sounds - Although not all are bad in GT6, FM just sounds richer to me.  FM wins this one hands down

Single Player mode - Gotta go with FM in this one.  If I want to race at Nordshchliefe in single player mode, it can be tough to find the race in the career mode.  I do like the Seasonal Events though but I prefer FM4

Multiplayer Mode - so many options as a host are available in GT6 that we only wished for in FM4.  The biggest being to actual practice and make tuning adjustments while waiting for the host to start the race.  GT6 on this one

Driving experience - This is a tough one for me.  I actually think its tougher to drive in GT6 especially in the faster cars but I mean that in a good way.  You have to watch your inputs a bit more and be smoother and make sure you keep it on the track.  Track edges can be tough on you if you dip a wheel off the track under power as you will be spinning.  The tracks also seem a bit bumpier so you cant jut flat foot it around some of these tracks.  I think GT6 makes you a better driver because of it.

All in all, I dont think you would go wrong getting a refurbished or used PS3 and GT6 especially if you are a fanatec user as your wheel will work with both.  I have not had any regrets so far (not to mention I didnt have a blueray player in my office so this was a nice bonus)

Hope this helps

I hope they have changed GT 6 controllers racing. When playing GT 1-4 you were at a big disadvantage with the controller vs a wheel. Has that changed?  I am planning to go to GT6 after the 1st of the yr.  I will be going with the controller until I can get my wheel set up.  I have an old wingman that will be used.

No need for the adaptor. Watch the video I made in the other topic. There is little to no difference in the pad for me now.

There must be a ton of Logitechs way under 200 bucks out there. I'm gonna look this weekend. I'll post up.

The #1 value in wheel and pedal sets for the PS3, and the PC for that matter, is the Logitech Driving Force GT.  I had one for over a year and it performed fine.  The pedal set is merely OK, but the wheel is solid.

The price is jacked up right now, probably because of the release of GT6 and the spiked demand for the wheel.  I got mine for $99.99 in 2010.

If you are stuck paying $180 or more, you might as well upgrade to the Logitech G27, which is $263 right now at amazon.  It has a better quality, leather wrapped wheel, a good quality H shifter and a higher end pedal set which includes a clutch:

You also could look at the Fanatec wheel offerings, with bundles ranging from $200 to $359:
