Analysts at Datamonitor are reporting that by 2010, the PS3 will over take the other consoles with an install base of around 75 million.
Obviously we take all prediction with a grain of salt, but these guys are supposed to be paid to track trends and sales figures. For the sake of Sony, I hope they are right.

"The Sony PlayStation 3 is expected to win the console war in the long term with an install base of around 75 million globally by 2010. The console is not expected to dominate as much as its predecessor, the PS2, due to late launch issues in the PAL region and the early lead of Microsoft's Xbox 360."
While 75 million may seem like a lot in terms of console sales, the PS2 has sold (and continues to sell) over 111 million units. Datamonitor takes into account the lack of availability and slow start at launch to help account for the 75 million in 2010. I guess we will just have to wait and see in the next 3 years.
