LucasArts announced an agreement, yesterday, with Day 1 Studios to develop a new next-generation franchise for console systems.
This agreement to deliver a new intellectual property for next-generation consoles is vague at best, but both sides have agreed that something special will be delivered.
LucasArts is responsible for some of the game industries most memorable games: Full Throttle (PC), Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, Gladius, The Dig and the several dozen Star Wars titles.
With the addition of Day 1 Studios, responsible for the MechAssault series and the port of F.E.A.R to the Xbox 360 there is a good combination for an innovated franchise. However, it sure would be nice to know what it is all about!
Peter Hirschmann, Vice President of Product Development at LucasArts said "LucasArts is determined to deliver outstanding new ideas to next-generation consoles, and our partnership with the great people at Day 1 Studios creates another opportunity for us to bring innovation and creativity to the market." He goes on to say "The phenomenal technology created by Day 1 directly affects gameplay in extremely innovative ways - and it perfectly complements the engaging story and intriguing characters you'd expect from a LucasArts title."
Denny Thorley, President of Day 1 Studios, remarked "We wanted to work with a publisher who would set the bar sky-high. It's a privilege to work with the creative minds behind some of the most successful frnchises in entertainment history, and we are inspired by the opportunity to work with LucasArts on their first entirely new property specifically for next-generation consoles."
The fact that Denny Thorley says "first entirely new property" makes one assume "not Star Wars related." Secondly, what makes next-generations consoles the focus for the franchise? It seems that visuals are constantly growing with each generation of console and PC but they seem to really be calling out "next-generation" consoles as the main focus around this new franchise.
If this was a Wii-centric franchise I would assume that the next-generation technology they're talking about is the new WiiMote control, but they say "consoles" which is plural and would not limit them to the neat features of the Wii. They also do not all have top-notch graphics (Wii specifically) so would the franchise be trying to push the visual envelope? Unsure.
Interesting... I would guess the franchise would be sci-fi based on the two brandings most popular games: Star Wars and MechAssault. Neither involve too many red robed wizards...
