It looks like at least one cat is out of the bag ahead of Microsoft’s E3 press conference tonight. It appears that Microsoft is offering a fourth SKU, a grey Xbox 360 !
This is a picture taken by some Xbox guys over at the Gamerscore Blog, they took some pics of the venue setup for tonight and published them on Flickr. Then the pictures disappeared almost as fast as the Gears of War PC webpages yesterday on Epics site.
So what could this Grey Xbox 360 have inside of it? We can only speculate for today because that question will be answered tonight at 8:30pm PST during their press conference.
There has been talk of a limited edition Halo 3 Xbox 360 . Perhaps this could be it, although we would expect it to be Halo green rather than gun metal grey. Could they have a new higher end system with built in HD-DVD and WiFi ? That doesn’t really fit with their theme of choice and expandability. One thing that could point to HD-DVD built in is how badly BluRay is killing HD-DVD in sales and support mostly due to Playstation3 install base. Since Microsoft is backing HD-DVD, could building it in be their answer to improving HD-DVD install base numbers? Could this be the first model to sport the new 65nm GPU and processors ? We can’t imagine they would make a new SKU for that. Although in the recent earnings report where they announced the new three year warranty, Robbie Bach said they had a handle on the system failure problems at the engineering level. Is this the product of that statement?
With the rumors of a $50 price drop being announced, there doesn’t seem to be room in the price gaping for this to fit between current offerings. So it must be a new system for the top end to compete with the new 80 GB Playstation 3 price point of $499. So I think we’ll go with 65nm processors and built in HD-DVD. We’ll find out tonight.
