Midway dropping support for Xbox

Midway posts a loss of $31 millions and comments on dropping original Xbox support for the future.

Although its typical for game developers to eventually stop supporting last generation consoles (read: no new games) the time span for the support drop usually extends further than what Midway is talking about.

Midway said that it is going to be difficult to sell any new games for the Xbox after the next Holiday season because of the momentum to build 360 games.

How upset are original Xbox gamers going to be when they start to see games taper off quickly in 2007? Will the console price dip when the production level for new releases drains to a minimum?

Microsoft has stated that they want the Xbox 360 to be profitable in 2007 - how much could they possibly concentrate on their older money bleeder product when they want their current generation to already be raking in a profit?

I would expect similar behavior to occur at other development studios and publishers that are working to keep their financial heads above water. Larger firms may continue their support, but only time will tell.
