The Nintendo Wii launch can be called an overwhelming success.
Unlike those other console makers who 'launch' with a mere 500,000 units world wide, Nintendo was ready for their launch.
In the first eight days the Wii was available in the USA, Nintendo today announced they sold 600,000 units. That made Nintendo the tidy sum of USD $190 million. That, however, isn't enough to fill the demand. People are still trying to find Wii's now that the holiday shopping season is in full swing and the Wii is on many Christmas Lists. There is a rumor floating around that WalMart is stockpiling Wii's to do a second launch on December 3rd at Midnight.
Nintendo wants a Wii under every Christmas tree this year. This is why they're shipping 250,000 units a week to retailers with a target of 4 million to be shipped world wide by the end of the year. With these kinds of numbers, it's probably no surprise that Zelda has sold more than 450,000 copies. It's the killer launch title for the Wii by far.
One can only speculate as to how Microsoft and Sony could have done over the same eight day launch period if they had just as many units to launch with. This year, though, Microsoft stands to gain from console shortages by both Sony and Nintendo so neither one can really afford to not have their products on the shelf. Microsoft is priced very competitively with new holiday bundle packages. To date the Nexgenwars website shows Microsoft with 7.6 million Xbox 360's sold, Sony with 321,000 Playstation 3's sold and Nintendo with 635,000 Wii's sold. Microsoft, with their one year head start, leads the pack but if Nintendo can keep pumping out the Wii's, they have a great shot closing that gap early next year.
