Sony took the wraps off the new Playstation at E3 today. The new console was shown, some game demos were given. The new console will have a blu-ray disc drive, it will play PS2 and PSOne games. It wil have a removable hard disc. It will have blue-tooth for wireless controllers, ethernet hook-up for Net, as well as wireless networking.
They had this to say (amoung other things) "The PlayStation 3 will feature the much-vaunted Cell processor co-designed with IMB and Toshiba, which will run at 3.2 Ghz. The console will sport 256mb XDR main RAM, a detachable 2.5 inch HDD slot, six USB 2.0 ports, Memory Stick Duo, a SD slot, a compact flash memory slot, 2 hdmi outputs, 1 av multi out, 1 SPDIF optical output, and 1-gigabit Ethernet built in port" It's also reported that the Nvidia GPU will have 256 MB of it's own RAM clocked at 700MHz.
Phew! what a scorcher.
The comments in the Rueters stories about the game demos indicate a higher degree of finish in the games than those shown with XBox 360, even though this system is not due for launch until 2006.
In the end, I think this means that the next gen console war will be a hard fought one with many ending up having a foot in each camp. With the specs reported for both systems, Sony has a definite performance edge on M$, but given that these systems are so much more powerful than what we have now, it's not like we'll be able to tell much difference. It will be te games that tell. And the thing about that is that compared to buying a PC, these things will be a relatively cost effective investment, why not get both?
The funniest thing I've see so far is Gamespot claiming 2 TFlop performance. The only way I can see them hitting that is to put a minimum of 4 cells in the thing, probably more. Clocked at 3.2GHz even the 9 core processor doesn't crank out sufficient operations to get close to 1 Tflop.

OK last thing, this quote from Gamespot "To show off the PlayStation 3's graphical brawn, Sony showed several game demos, including an Unreal 3 engine show-off of what appeared to be Unreal Tournament 2007. In what must come as a relief to developers, Epic Games' Tim Sweeney was on hand to vouch for the PS3, saying it was "easy to program for" and that Epic had received its first PS3 hardware two months ago. He proved the tech demo was real time by showing it again and by manipulating the camera and zooming in."
As hey say....It Just Got Interesting!
Now I know I have to get both, regardless of anything else, I will be getting the PS3....
Enjoy the articles, this seems like a very high quality unieling. Wish M$ had done something similar instead of hosting a Killers concert.
