After all the Xbox 360 news that there has been it’s a real change of pace to have some major PS3 news to review. IGN has the lowdown on PS Meeting 05, a Sony event that this year has shown tons of new stuff on the PS3. Click HERE to go have a look. Highlights included some of the tech demos from E3 ’05, however that was not all, among the many announcements are... Playable demo of Gundam for PS3, Several announcements of additions to the development kit such as physics software from Havoc and Ageia, Sony is acquiring SN systems, a leading supplier of game development middleware, their key product has been used for practically every gaming platform that is current. Sony has licenced Unreal Engine 3.0 as part of the PS3 development kit. Other games discussed (some with screen shots) include Genji, Liar, Resident Evil 5, Endless Saga.

OPINION
This is big news for the Sony community, personally I think this is big news for the gaming community, it’s a good look at what is to come. Looking at the trailers and demos it’s clear that there is a major bump up in terms of capability in these new consoles and the games built for them.

A playable Gundam game for PS3 was shown. You have to look at the screen shots and videos. I haven’t subscribed to IGN, but even the low-res versions of the videos rock.

Apparently this is the first build of the game, build by hand without the benefit of most of the Sony dev kit extras. Perhaps more remarkable is the fact that the game is running on hardware that’s only running at 2.4GHz with a GPU that’s not the final version and certainly not as powerful(Nvidia has yet to produce final silicon, as far as I can gather). Click HERE you can see the PS3 dev kit hardware and read some details regarding it. The Gundam developer has, apparently, only used the general purpose core on the Cell and has yet to optimize for the other math cores, nor has a physics engine been used to enhance things further. All in all, this is a really early development build, but you can see the potential here for an awesome game, especially if online play is a major component.

Remember, PS3 is about 9 (nine) months from delivery. And yet look at the initial build of Gundam, if this is nine months before release, imagine how things will improve by launch time. It seems certain this will be a launch title.

Halo2 is a fantastic game, online play in general is awesome, and bringing those two elements together was a genius move for the Xbox. I can only hope that someone at Sony has been watching and sees the potential for online play with PS3. An online version of the PS3 Gundam kinda looks like it could be an awesome first person shooter for death match and co-op play.

Now, I couldn’t finish without balancing this all off with a small swipe at the world of Sony…Do you think perhaps with the PS3, there will be enough power in the box to make Gran Turismo online capable and handle crash damage?

Ah well, next up, some Xbox 360 news.
