Sony Controller: Shapely and sensitive!

Not only is the boomerang design gone, but a new design is in, and this design has people moving (literally).

The new controller is said to have an accelerometer (something that detects motion). Apparently the new design, looking similar to the PlayStation's DualShock, has a wireless counterpart. Of course everyone comes to expect wireless now so that's nothing special. However its said to detect motion as well which can be designed into games and give you a new dimension of gaming.

Phil Harrison, a Sony representative said that its "secret" couldn't wait any longer. The controller he presented was motion sensitive. Harrison said it has "six degrees of freedom" with no external sensor required. Of course this new controller design will come standard with your purchase of a PS3.

So, doesn't the Wii also have this neat motion feature? They've not presented yet, but its clear that Sony wanted to come out of the closet on that design while everyone continues to wait to see the Wii's little Wand.

UPDATE: The PS3 joystick will not have vibration technology ("force feedback"). Sony is saying its because it interferes with their sensor systems for the motion system, but it must be noted that Sony was hit with a 90.7 million USD lawsuit by Immersion. Immersion, for those that do not know, hold the patent on the force feedback technology.... coincidence?
