Sony was pleased to announce 1 million consoles shipped (not sold) to the US and we know they sold 466,716 units in Japan. That figure doesn't hit the mark Sony was shooting for: 2.4 million units .
They didn't hit the mark but tried hard considering all the barriers they encountered. These problems forced Sony to spend extra money to fly PlayStation 3's to the US to hit retail outlets for the holidays - a costly decision. In the end, it seems they've come shy of their goal by around a million units.
Reuters approached Sony Computer Entertainment America's CEO Jack Tretton to confirm some facts, figures and sales numbers but he declined to comment. They were fast to announce a 1 million figure at CES but refuse to acknowledge a world-wide sales figure, why? 1up.com has a reason why - they missed the target.
Maybe we'll see some true figures announced from Sony this year. Our guess is they'll hold off announcing facts and figures until US and Japanese sales increase.
