Tempest to arrive on XBLA?

Old school gamers may remember a 1980s game called Tempest. They may also remember some of the remakes such as Tempest 2000 for the Atari Jaguar What's next? XBLA?

Jeff Minter, the brains behind Tempest 2000 keeps a live journal that documents himself and his wacky adventures. He reminds me of the Jerry Garcia for video games. Well, recently he has been talking about a remake of Tempest for the Xbox 360:
"It's my XBLA game which is a sequel to Tempest 2000/3000. The main character is the Space Giraffe (and now it seems that people are referring to the whole game as Space Giraffe) }:-)."
Nobody is saying that Jeff makes any sense in his ramblings - but he's a proven talent for many visual effects such as his visualizations (light synthesizer) known as "Neon" built into the Xbox 360 console. Now, take his visualizations and lighting magic and add them to a game like Tempest and you have something like:

On his website Jeff explains that the shots were taken with a digital camera and due to shutter speed and such, many of the visualizations have "mixed" to combine something a little more chaotic and unclear than the game really is thus far. So, look at the pictures for their "visualizations" more then clarity of game interface.

For those unfamiliar with Tempest, it was developed in 1980 by Atari, designed and programmed by David Theurer (an arcade game, not a console game). It was later re-designed by Jeff Minter and called Tempest 2000 from Atari/Llamasoft for the PC, Atari Jaguar, Saturn, and Macintosh.

So, what can we expect from the new release? What can you say about a flying space giraffe that's shooting things in outer space? Very hard to tell, but the original arcade game is a classic and known by many old school coin-op gamers. Perhaps the new release for Xbox Live Arcade will live up to the expectations of the retro gamer.

This is not a port like pac-man, frogger, and Street Fighter. This is a new game based on an old idea.

Check out (if your daring) Jeff's live journal on the topic here for more screenshots and such.
