Phil Spencer, Microsoft Game Studios (MGS) General Manager admits that Microsoft blew their first party release scheduling and that has resulted in...
very long gaps between first party game releases.
The first post-launch MGS title to come out for Xbox 360 was Dead or Alive 4 back in January 2006. My guess is Dead or Alive 4 was put on the high priority list after a dismal Japan launch of the Xbox 360. Microsoft needed a game that appealed to Japanese gamers and DoA4 was the only thing on the drawing board at the time. Then 210 days later in August, Ninety Nine Nights was also launched - again a more Japanese style game. Where are the first party titles designed for the home front market? Maybe they think the November 2005 launch releases of Perfect Dark Zero, Project Gotham Racing and Kameo would tie us over until Viva Pinata in November '06?
Spencer says that MGS is back on track to a more consistent release schedule starting this holiday season. Some of the first party titles we will see in the coming months are Viva Pinata, Gears of War, Crackdown, Forza, Mass Effect, Fable 2 and Halo3. Spencer cautions, though, that they won't let release dates or consumer expectation dictate when a game will be released. He says a bad first party game reflects more negatively on Microsoft than a great delayed release.
Here is a recent list of all the MGS titles currently known to be in the works
Spencer concludes with the Xbox 360 will have 160 games to choose from this holiday season. In contrast, in a recent interview Kaz says the Playstation 3 will have less than 20.
