It looks like Nintendo plans on quantity being their ace in the hole for the holiday shopping season duke-out.
Nintendo is well ahead in it's production schedule. In fact it looks like right now the Wii will launch with 2 million consoles, which is double the quantity announced previously. This may be the first console launch in a long time where you wont need to camp for it. You may actually be able to walk into a store on launch day and get one!
If you miss out on launch day quantities, Nintendo is currently predicting at least 7 million Wii's will be produced in the 4th Quarter (Oct - Dec) and that number may be as high as 9 million. So if you're a parent with children and have your Christmas hearts set on a Wii under the tree this year, it sounds like you shouldn't have a problem finding one.
Originally Nintendo had announced shipping only 6 million Wii's by the end of March 2007 and now it's looking like they may build if not ship 11 million Wii's by the end of the year. So their ramp up is significantly exceeding original expectations.
With so many Wii's available, lets hope that the software end of the things is able to keep pace.
