People have rumored about the cost of the web browser for the Wii for serveral months. Now, all that has changed because it has been announced as a free download until June! Gamers rejoyce...
Ok, well, gamers probably don't want to browse the web from their console but with a free browser there is a likely chance that you will. The rumor cost was USD $20.00 and that might be a large barrier to entry for home owners with a computer that have free web browsers by Microsoft, FireFox and Opera already installed.
So why have a web browser at all? Why not really. It's a system that has network access and now you can browse the web on your TV. Seems like a good idea especially at the price of zero.
The browser supports all the latest buzz words: Flash, Ajax, JavaScript and all that garbage. So you can browse normal sites like a real PC/Mac user. You can even search google maps which relies heavily on some of the new browser features.
The browser, Opera, is one of the fastest web browsers on the PC and has recently decided to push for more mobile browsing on cell phones and PDA's. Apparently the Wii is small enough to be considered a mobile device or the folks at Opera saw a good chance to bring their browser to the masses.
