Game Releases: Week of April 9

Greetings 2old2play and welcome to another week of gaming! This week’s releases are great- eh, who am I kidding- this is a pretty light week of releases. While the week may be the light beer of releases, there are a few pretty decent games. We’ve got some old school gaming goodness, a few wars, some 2D fighters, a creepy Nintendo game, and some pretty interesting arcade games.

And now...... here are the releases for the week!

icon PC Releases

Legend of Grimrock- An old school style dungeon game that takes its inspiration from games such as Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, and Ultima Underworld. Control a party of four prisoners fighting through monsters, traps and puzzles and they try to find their way out. Game retails at $14.99- not too bad.

Men of War: Condemned Heroes- This latest game from this tactical action war game focuses on the Soviet penal battalions during WWII (must. not. insert. phallic. joke. here). Game includes 4 single player campaigns covering the war from 1942 through 1945. No multiplayer options appear to be available.

Naval War: Arctic Circle- Real-Time Strategy game where you can control both naval and aerial forces in the Arctic. Control either the NATO or Russian forces in two separate campaigns. The game covers over 32 MILLION kilometers of gaming area and 11 naval forces. Online play through LAN or internet is available

Tribes: Ascend- This free-to-play first person shooter is available in multiplayer only.  Game will feature a class-based system which determines armor and weapon type. Three classes will be available from the start, and others can be accessed through experience points or by paying. Different skins and experience boosters will also be available with cash.

Phantom Breaker- This 2D fighting game comes from Japan, as you compete in a tournament- how original. The winner gets their wish granted. Game includes fourteen fighters and each fighter has two types of fighting styles- one focuses on speed, while the other focuses on defense. Game also includes online multiplayer.

3ds 3DS Releases

Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir- Here is a horror game that actually uses the 3DS in a unique way other than the usual 3D crutch. This game applies AR (augmented reality) as players use the camera as monsters in the game appear in the camera in the real world. If it works, it sounds pretty cool, but very creepy!

arcade Arcade and DLC Releases

Fez (XBOX Live Arcade)- A 2D platform played in a 3D world in which you control a little pixelated dude in a (you guessed it) fez! The game plays a bit as a puzzle game as the rotation of the camera changes the accessible areas. The object is to collect the cubes in the area to unlock the next area.

Skullgirls (PS Network/XBOX Live Arcade)- Another 2D fighting game this week. This time, the fighters are fighting for the Skull Heart, which grants wishes.... uhh... is this not the same exact story of Phantom Breaker??? To Skullgirls’ defense, they do offer the option to fight with 3 fighter teams. Other players can opt for one or two fighters. If multiple fighters are chosen, the health is split between the fighters. Fighting online will be available.

The Splatters (XBOX Live Arcade)- This physics based game uses blob-like creatures whose objective is to blow up! The objective is to blow up as much as possible and create numerous combos. Game includes an option called “Splatter TV” where you can share your game video with friends, or watch others perform their high scores and make you feel like a noob.

And now it is time again for our weekly “What were they smoking??” Award. This week is awarded to our first arcade submission, World Gone Sour for PS Network and XBOX Live Arcade. In this platformer, you play as a piece of candy that looks like a gummy person coated in sugar. This piece of candy has a goal, and that goal is to reach a human stomach. Apparently this candy wants to either find purpose in life or to die- you decide. We may not have known for sure what they were smoking, but we definitely know that they had a bad case of the munchies.

Stay tuned next week for more new games on the way and maybe some surprises! Until then...happy gaming 2old2play!
