New Releases: Week of September 8, 2014

Every drought has to end: eventually it’s going to rain. As long  summer seems to be, at some point, we will have to send our smelly, disobedient children back to school for another year. Losers will eventually win, wives will eventually cave in and let you have your way, and the fucking game companies will eventually stop dropping shit and make something that you actually want to play. I got some good news, amigo: summer is ending, the kids are in school, the panties are on the doorknob and it’s raining like hell. The drought is officially over. This week Bungie snaps back into the gaming world, pc gamers get to kick some birds, Double Fine goes techno, and EA releases another sports game.

Destiny

Destiny, the first installment of a planned Bungie space trilogy, is an epic interplanetary saga of light vs dark. The Traveler, a sentient rock that fueled the advancement of the human race on Earth, has indirectly brought us to near extinction. The darkness is massing to extinguish the last light of humanity and only the resurrected corpses of special fallen guardians can save the hairless apes from destruction.

Destiny boasts a meaty single player campaign, 3 player co-op, and 6 vs 6 competitive multiplayer modes. Players, guns, and gear are all upgradeable, there are speeder bikes and spaceships, and environments range from Old Mother Russia, the Moon, to Mars and beyond. If you’re not into that, you could always troll people at the tower. It’s your game, amigo...play it however you want starting September 9, at midnight.

Fable Anniversary

Release Date: September 12
Platform: PC

Lionhead Studios is releasing their updated, upgraded, and HD version of the original chicken kicking simulator. It still doesn’t have all the shit that Peter Molyneux promised a decade ago, but it looks nice. Available on Steam starting September 12.

Hack n Slash

Release Date: September 9
Platform: PC

Double Fine kind of crept up and released this one while no one was looking. It looks like an old-school RPG that you have to hack to win. I’m thinking TRON meets Zelda for some reason. Schafer and crew are a solid developer and, despite the goofy 80s throwback trailer, I would expect this one to be entertaining. Hackers can steal this one from Steam starting September 9.

NHL 15

Wow, time really does fly. It seems just like yesterday I was writing about an earlier EA NHL game that I had no intention of playing, reviewing, or giving a shit about. See you next year, EA!
