Doom XBLA Review

The Classic PC Shooter on your 360. But is it worth 800 Points?

In a nut shell, yes. Doom for the 360 Live Arcade is worth the 800 points and not just because it is a classic game, but because they have taken Doom and upped the game with a solid multiplayer co-op and death match as well as a fantastic visceral single player experience which makes you feel like it was 1993 and shareware was still king.

Now Nerve, the creative team of the 360 version did one thing one might hated, they decided not make widescreen support (please release a patch for this even if it stretches the screen). Is this a deal breaker? Not in the least, the game is still quick and fun which is a rare experience for games being released on the Xbox Live Arcade lately.

Graphically the game looks identical to what I remember way back in the day, but they are definitely crisper and cleaner. This is nice because if they “Enhanced” the graphics like they did for Time Pilot, Scramble, and the other games it might have really ruined the experience.

The sound and music is dead on from the classic, but there does seem to be more music then I recall (Damn I am getting old if I cannot remember a game from 13 years ago) and it seems to be more Rock and Roll then before. This is a nice addition if its new and if its from the original, well I remember when I was a kid, going to school, walking up hill there and back home.

Game play is dead on. The controls are smooth, not fast like a mouse, but do not ruin the game play at all. Killing and dodging is just as fun as it was on the PC and maybe even a bit more easy then before.

Multiplayer is a riot and is much quicker and easier to play with then the old days of trying to network your home PC to your friends PC. No networking degree needed this time. While only one game was tested online, it was a blast and more then a little nostalgic.

All four chapters are included with this game and you can run through them in a few hours on the easiest difficulty, or I’M TOO YOUNG TO DIE! But remember the fun of playing on NIGHTMARE? Either do I, I blocked those memories out with the DOS commands needed to play the original game, but it is more fun then any of the current stream of games on the arcade.

So in the end, 800 points is worth it for this game. You do not have to buy extra chapters, buy multiplayer, buy the ability to use the chain gun or chain saw in multiplayer, and it is classic greatness at its best.

I highly recommend this game to all action and First Person Shooter fans, watch out for Pinky he is still a sneaky SOB with bad breath.
