SSX Blur is out for the Wii, is it a worthy purchase?
SSX Blur is hard for a guy like me. I've never had a desire to play a snowboarding game, skateboarding game or a skiing game before. This was different, though, this was Wii.
What makes SSX Blur different from other Wii games?
It is the first game that I've seen, save Madden 07 to work from a third party title and utilize the Wii Accessories (controller and nunchuck) to a full degree.
So, I have played a large quantity of the Wii catalog and some have been implemented better than others. I think SSX Blur did a fine job.
Some nay sayers talk about how "hard" it is to do things and how the control scheme is "just done because they have to." True, they do have to utilize this scheme to make a good Wii game.
Want a sharp turn? Pull left or right and tilt with it! Simple.
Jumping is like most Wii games, lift up on the nunchuck and you'll take air (not always a good thing).
Flip the controller up to reverse spin, down to forward spin, shake to the left or right for twists. Easy as pie! To stop your stunt before landing, hit A or B.
Failure to hit A or B on a landing will put you knee deep in a snow pile of your own flesh. Take it slow buddy.
That might mean hitting a jump holding A and doing a loop motion, a "Z" motion or even motion with both the controller and nunchuck at the same time.
One word: HARD.
I've still yet to pull off even a single Ubertrick, but I'm not concerned because they're made to be hard. That's why they start the word with "uber" right?
The ubertricks are definitely feats of skill because you'll need to use both controllers utilizing motion, button clicks and keeping a sense of your height and distance. When trying a cool ubertrick I found myself almost pulling it off by ending up against a stone wall or in a hill of snow.
Not only must you make sure you've got space for a great trick, but you've got to hit the jump in a sensible way to avoid harm.
I think the controls work, I've not had a huge issue with them but I do realize it's going to take time. Note: I've never been a fan or really played other versions in this genre so I may pick it up faster than hardcore boarders.
If you're buying this game based solely on graphics then you're buying games for the wrong console.
The commentator that talks every now and again is pretty cool and he's not over the top annoying (*cough* *cough* Madden).
The game has shown me that the Wii isn't just novelty control, it's possible to create a game that's solid. I'm still on the bunny slope having only logged a couple hours. So far I'm happy with the sale although the wife thinks it looks boring.
Definitely worth the look if your trying to find a non-Wii Sports type game. Off to the slopes!

Controls
The most important factor in SSX Blur is the controls, 100% guaranteed. If you're not a fan of the control scheme Nintendo has implemented, move on...So, I have played a large quantity of the Wii catalog and some have been implemented better than others. I think SSX Blur did a fine job.

Controls - The Basics
You'll find the basics work naturally and are easy to pickup. The nunchuck's analog stick moves you left, right, accelerate or break. That's not all - if you tilt the nunchuck you can add more fuel to the fire, sharper turns and such.Want a sharp turn? Pull left or right and tilt with it! Simple.
Jumping is like most Wii games, lift up on the nunchuck and you'll take air (not always a good thing).
Controls - Air born Moves
Fly through the air by hitting a ramp or falling off a cliff, now the Wii controller comes into play.Flip the controller up to reverse spin, down to forward spin, shake to the left or right for twists. Easy as pie! To stop your stunt before landing, hit A or B.
Failure to hit A or B on a landing will put you knee deep in a snow pile of your own flesh. Take it slow buddy.
Controls - Ubertricks!
To perform high end tricks, you'll need a lot of practice and skill. Not just "mortal kombat" style skill either, real motion sensing "skillz."That might mean hitting a jump holding A and doing a loop motion, a "Z" motion or even motion with both the controller and nunchuck at the same time.
One word: HARD.
Controls - Personal Opinion
This game took me at least forty minutes to get down some of the harder techniques, to navigate a course without smashing a wall and scoring high points for tricks.I've still yet to pull off even a single Ubertrick, but I'm not concerned because they're made to be hard. That's why they start the word with "uber" right?

Graphics
This game actually has them. They're not mind boggling, but they're some of the better graphics I've seen on the Wii. Nothing like Madden 07, which is a good thing. If you're buying this game based solely on graphics then you're buying games for the wrong console.
Sound
The sound is okay, nothing radical. No sound tracks like you'd get from an EA game on the Xbox 360 but I hate rap so that's good (I disable all rap music in any game I play). The commentator that talks every now and again is pretty cool and he's not over the top annoying (*cough* *cough* Madden).
Overall
Overall, the game is solid yet hard. The challenges are much the same with any game in this genre: master the moves, repeat the moves, time the moves and combo the moves. Get them all down and you'll be fine. The game has shown me that the Wii isn't just novelty control, it's possible to create a game that's solid. I'm still on the bunny slope having only logged a couple hours. So far I'm happy with the sale although the wife thinks it looks boring.
