The spectacle known as E3 has come and gone. Every fanboy has spent themselves defending why they think their console of choice won E3 and the other sucks donkey testes. Usually in slightly more colorful language. If you have read anything I have written you will know that I fall square into the Xbox camp. It's not because I dislike the PS4, I fully admit it is a sweet console, it's just not the console for me. I am not a huge fan of the majority of games that are exclusive to the PlayStation, I have serious physical issues with the controller and anything that I really want to play is multi-platform anyway. That doesn't mean that I think Microsoft "won". It doesn't mean I think Sony "won". Each and every game that is released, regardless of console, drives our hobby and our passion forward. I know it's lame to say but the consumers are the winner year after year. I just get excited to see what everybody is doing. Sadly what I saw this year from everyone was sequels and re-releases. There was some new IP shown but I didn't see anything that grabbed me, that made me jump up and say "I have to play that!". I hope there was something out there for you this year.
Anyway onto the new releases of the week
Deadlight: Directors Cut
Release Date: June 21st, 2016
Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
Before I go on, see my note above about re-releases. This Side scrolling horror game was released in 2012 for the PC Xbox 360. Deadlight: Directors Cut gets some spit and polish and a new platform added as well. While the first was rather short, the new cut has added "a host of new content". How much is a "host" anyway?
Mighty No. 9
Release Date: June 21st, 2016
Platforms: PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Mac, Lin. WiiU
Mighty No. 9 started life on Kickstarter where people flocked due to the involvement of Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune. With the project funded in around 2 days people were super excited to play this game. Then it got delayed and the internet showed its ugly underbelly. Well internet jerks Mighty No. 9 is finally here!
Pac-Man 256
Release Date: June 21st, 2016
Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
Already an Android and iOS game by the makers of Crossy Road, Pac-Man 256 is making its way onto consoles and PC. The game constantly scrolls down so you have to guide Pac-Man up through the maze eating dots and power pellets and ghosts and fruit before you run off the bottom of the screen or a ghost eats you. I have it on Android and I have to say it is actually quite a bit of fun...in short bursts. However there is a new 4 player multiplayer mode that could be kind of cool.
Umbrella Corps.
Release Date: June 21st, 2016
Platforms: PC, PS4
So if the name sounds familiar and you are wondering where the "Resident Evil" is...well it's not really here. It kind of is as there are zombies and stuff but unlike Resident Evil, Umbrella Corps. is a tactical based multiplayer shooter. Basically each team is fighting over the collapsed Umbrella Corporation's bio-weapon technology. This is an increasingly crowded genre and it will be interesting to see if the RE fans can make it a success.
