Microsoft vs. Sony: The Format War

Microsoft believes HD-DVD is the way to go while Sony obviously believes their Blu-Ray technology is the pwn. Looking at the recent figures, Sony may not win the console war but their format isn't doing too shabby.

Home Media Research (via Reuters) reported that Sony's Blu-ray Disc format is now outselling Microsoft-backed HD-DVD at a ratio of nearly two-to-one. Between January 1 and July 1, a total of 795,000 HD-DVDs were sold, versus 1.6 million BDs. As of the end of July, 2.2 million BDs and 1.5 million HD-DVDs have sold since they both hit the market last year.

A good example, the movie 300 which has sold 190,000 Blu-Ray discs while only 97,000 HD-DVD versions of the movie have been sold. This doesn't constitute a clear winner but highly popular movies may indeed give us the future outlook of the war on media. Not a lot of people are buying high definitions movies to begin with and those that do are leaning towards the intense action movies that clearly show off the high quality definition.

The research article didn't mention the PlayStation 3 as a Blu-Ray player which is odd, considering Sony used this to drive initial sales of the product. Oddly enough, NPD research has shown a high degree of PS3 owners and Xbox 360 owners don't even know about the extended features of their console. For instance, many PS3 owners didn't realize their product even played Blu-Ray movies... yet their counted in Sony's success to sell the next-generation DVD player.
