With only 197,000 units available in North America, the PS3 was more like an open Beta test than a console launch. Sony seems to have fixed that problem.
In an official statement today from Sony's David Karraker said, "While initial day-one launch shipment goals weren't achievable due to early manufacturing issues, those problems have been resolved and we do remain focused on having one million Playstation 3's in the pipeline by December 31, 2006,"
Much like Microsoft had to do with their launch last year, Sony is sending units to North America via air cargo which is much more expensive than by ship but also many times faster. This of course only increases the loss they take on each console sale.
In another shocking statement, Karr said that the Playstation 2 outsold all other 'computer entertainment systems' in November including newer systems from the competition. Though he doesn't give any numbers to back that up, the Playstation 2 is readily available and the cheapest console available. So it's very possible budget minded families are looking for a bargain console for well under $200.
