Coffee Memoirs: The moment is not guaranteed, its something you need to grasp. I recently shared some precious time with my brothers and my grandmother whose time in this world is limited. We smiled and asked her to tell us some stories that we most likely had not heard about her life and then started to share more about our recent lives. A funny story came up regarding a mouse in my house and how two cats were completely useless against modern day vermin. Tired of their inability, I fashioned a racetrack with wood boards leading the mouse to where I wanted it to go and how I had trapped it one spot. As I attempted to toss a towel on top of it so I could pick it up, it quickly jumped up and started heading up my shirt sleeve! I started to pat my sleeve frantically with my opposite hand and grasped the mouse in place thru my shirt. The struggles from the mouse were minimal at that point and I ran outside to attempt to shake it out of my shirt and finally succeeded in freeing myself from the miniature villain. My brother while listening to the story was reminded of and brought up another time where a squirrel had become trapped in my parents’ home and how I went to remove the pest. I opened doors and did my best to guide it away, but its pea size brain knew only to cause destruction and head for closed windows which I had no way to open. A few more expensive laps through the house passed and I trapped it behind and then to the side of the fridge pinning between it and the cabinet. I thought carefully for a moment and had very few options. Channel lock pliers on its solely exposed head was the only thing I could do. Moral of the story? Lots of different ways to grasp things based on the moment at hand. It not always possible to keep your hands clean and the stories that get shared with your grandmother … well, when you “Grasp” the conversation is going dark… it’s okay to say, “Next story please.”
