On Your Knees Sir

Today’s lesson comes from our very own Txcountymounty of the OneAdamGeezer clan. This tutorial explains how to mod your Xbox controller to allow your master chief to crouch at the flick of a switch. How is this useful you ask? Well imagine you need to stay hidden for long periods of time to contest your flag. Doesn’t that hurt your thumb? Yeah, we thought so too.

Here is what you will need:
1. A spare controller to use in case you kill yours trying this.
2. Some sort of switch
3. Appropriate length of wire
4. Soldering Iron with solder and stuff
5. Dremel or other cutting tool
6. Hobby knife for trimming the hole

I’m taking for granted that you don’t need explanations for some of the common sense things.

DISCLAIMER
I take no responsibility for what you do to your controller, this could really mess it up and render it unusable if you screw it up so continue on at your own risk.

Step 1: Unscrew the 7 phillips head screws on the back of the controller. Be carefull when you take the controller apart the buttons fall out. They only go in one way so it makes it real easy to put back together.

Step 2: Unscrew the 6 (i think) screws holding down the circuit board they are labeled with little white arrows.

Step 3: Disconnect the rumble jacks

Step 4: Remove the circuit board and turn it over. On the right side you will notice a release for the trigger assembly (right side when turned over). remove the clip and you can lift it up a little (it catches on the other side and I didn’t want to mess with it and break it, it should come off, I think but like I said I didn’t want to mess with it so I worked around it. If you lift it up a little bit you can see the solder points as noted below. notice just to the right of the big hole is where the assembly release was and its pulled up just a tad.

Step 5: Get your switch. I used one from an old Wienerschnitzel kids meal toy. Thank you wienerschnitzel

Step 6: Solder the switch leads to the points above, obviously carefully. and youre done. I did it without removing the trigger assembly so it’s possible. If you know what you’re doing more than I do and think you can take the thing off without breaking it, have at it.

Step 7: You got it done. now just cut a hole in the controller housing with a dremel tool or something to fit the switch. I put it up towards the top of the left side as you can see below just because the leads that were on my switch were short and I didn’t want to mess with soldering longer wires to it. You, however can put it wherever you want.

Step 8: Make sure when you reassemble that you don’t pinch any wires and that everything goes in nice and smooth. My switch sticks out a little because I didn’t want to shave off part of the circuit board, but I’m not really too picky it looks ok to me. Also my switch was a little long so I shave it down with the dremel.

There you go, its done. Now you can play halo 2 and walk around crouched and off everyone’s radar.

I may have left some minor details out but I figure if you can get to read this then some of the stuff you can figure out on your own. If you have any questions or comments you can post in our forum at this thread --> here
