Goin' Muddin'

Saturday evening they had the "Mud Races" at the County Expo which is where off road vehicles attempt to push their way through or over a 200 foot long course of deep mud. My son Christopher, being a 5 year old boy, has a genetically predisposed affinity to anything involving dirt so I thought I would take him.

With earplugs and cooler in hand we showed up at the gate. They almost didn't let us in because I was not wearing the required NASCAR cap or the ubiquitous "Git 'er dun" Tshirt. Thinking quickly, I told her that my cap had blown off my head as I was riding my four-wheeler on the deer lease that afternoon. My spare cap was in my pickup that was in the shop. I also pointed out that Christopher's shirt had a truck on it. They reluctantly let us in.

The people inside the venue were a colorful mixture of carnies and rednecks.

There was an enormous woman reclining in a strained lawn chair making sandwiches for her unkempt children that were clamoring all over their pickup.

She was not making them on plates and she was not making them one at a time.

She took out an entire loaf of bread and placed the slices all over her girth as she laid back in the chair. She then spooged sandwich spread on each slice of bread. After that was a half inch slab of baloney and she starts slapping them together and handing them out. I couldn't turn away - it was like watching a car wreck.

Her children turned into an explosion of bread crumbs and sandwich spread as they hastily chewed their food with their mouths open. Mom then gave a sandwich to her husband/boyfriend and he casually ate his along with tugs from his bottomless can of Milwaukee's Beast.

Music blasted and vehicle's boomed for the evening. It was fun to watch but it was really fun watching Christopher have a good time.

While we were there they announced future events. One was a demolition derby. I'll let you guys know how that one works out.

People watching is one of the great parts of life. Certain venues are better than others. Fringe events are usually better than mainstream. Racing vs. Symphony, Shooting Competitions vs. School Board Meetings, etc. Sounds like you had a good time and you're your son's hero. Doesn't get much better than that!
