I was into the differences between the Bluray and the HDDVD as i thought that the size difference between the two disks would make a considerable difference in quality etc. I found this handy little website which i thought was not only the movies they were talking a bout as this explained exactly the whole PS3 V`s 360.

Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs enable HDTV reproduction because of their massive storage capacities. Using dual-layer techniques, HD-DVD can store as much as 30 gigabytes of data while a Blu-Ray disc can pack in a whopping 50 gigabytes. In the lab, techies already are working on several-layered discs that could allow more than 100 gigabytes of storage on one disc. That's enough for several HDTV movies, special features and compelling interactive content. Or a content provider could put more than 100 hours of standard-definition quality programming on one DVD. All 180 episodes of Seinfeld on one disc, anyone?

This is the full discussion and i think you will see what i mean when they start discussing that the advantage of HDDVD is that it is out 1st and cheaper (sound familiar?)

I don't see the 30 vs 50 as that big of a deal. I don't have time to watch that much extra content. If The extra value material ends on a second disk as they do now, I don't see that as a big deal. I will be waiting for this war to end before I spend any money on either format. Sony was burned with Betamax during the last big format war, so I think they may pull it out this time. However, you never know.

Yeah at the moment heres not much difference however at least with the 50gb it gives more space for improvements to quality etc. Mind the original DVD`s the quality wasnt much better than VHS but as it went along the quality got better.

Well multi format DVDs are in the pipeline. Some films will come with 3 formats on them! I have read that multi-format players are already being made and some discs even being made with the 3 formats pressed onto different layers. Unfortunately i cant remember where i read this and a disk with Blu-ray,+HDDVD,+DVD content on it sounds almost impossible. But as always "never say never".

@Umpa - NEC and another company are working on drives that read both formats HDDVD/Bluray. They will have to pay huge fees but people would buy those. Also, I read an english company has developed a DVD with something like 6+ layers. So thats almost 30GB with the old formats (work on old dvd drives). I read it a while back so I'm not clear on it. But not much of this matters as none of them have the money to force it upon people like HDDVD and Bluray is. its like they want to fight before they listen to anyone else.

I agree if they do this then i think a lot of people would buy them due simply to the fact its the saftest option at least when one disapears you still have the other player :)
