Field Trip!

So I have seen the new fangled consoles at Best Buy. Let’s start with the PS3, I wasn’t so much a fan of the XMB, but the games seem fine. I really can’t see difference in how they look compared to a 360. In the end, Sony will do well, and the people who get it will be happy with it. I don’t see a reason to jump ship from the 360 though. If I were buying today, XBOX LIVE would still make me get the 360 over the PS3. I am glad I didn’t wait.

The Wii was there, and behind glass, but I watched the demo for a while. The racing game I saw, Excite Truck, wasn’t bad. I think they had the demo running in 480p, and it wasn’t horrible looking. Since I didn’t play the game that’s all I can say about it. Then the Wii Sports came on. Fuck that. I realize that it was a choice to make the games look that way so you only think about the game play, but for me it didn’t work. I wasn’t playing, and watching the blocky body forms play sports awkwardly made me throw up in my mouth. I didn’t stick around after that, but I didn’t go home either.

Next to the PS3 about 5 feet away was the 360 demo. It was just on a loading screen waiting for someone to pick what they wanted to do next. Just three colorful choices there, but not game play. If I were setting it up, I would have set some sort of screen saver to show the games while the unit wasn’t being used. I didn’t bother to use it, I own the damn thing.

My last stop was the router isle. I didn’t get anything today, but I want a replacement router. Right now I am running my very old 802.11b. I have had two A/B/G routers from Linksys since then. Both died quickly. I want the speed, but can’t find an A/B/G alternative. I did look at the new “pre-N” routers, they seem fine but don’t support A. Not sure if I really care that much anymore, hell, the B has been fine. If you have any wireless routers you think are great let me know.

I'm using a WET 11 B bridge on my 360 connecting to a Linksys WCG200 gateway (router/modem combo). B still works fine, even hosting. I went with the gateway after lightning fried my modem and old B router. When I had two units the router would overheat in the summer with the units stacked. With one I dont have that issue. Stay away from pre-N until they finalize the standard. Every review I have read says to wait.
