Video Games the New Religion?

Let me say first off that I'm not saying people worship these things.  Nor do I want them to.  However, the voracity with which politicians and some individuals attack all games, violent or not, has made me wonder.  This is a much bigger issue than "they don't like it," especially when Germany, traditionally the home of the super-smart scientists, wants to make it a crime to produce a violent game.

I used to think it was just ignorant Americans, of which we have plenty, that wanted to ban everything on the planet.  But its world-wide.  And the sad part is, there are literally very few people that actually want this type of censorship.  Consider this:  all things being equal there are thousands of people wanting the censorship, and billions that don't.

So the title of this entry is about religion.  Religion is becoming less and less popular, especially in the European Union.  Humans haven't evolved out of the need for such an institution.  So what do these non-religious types do?  Regardless of how you feel about religion, it is all about fear and control of the afraid.  What better to fear than something you're too afraid to even try out?  Its that nasty technology stuff!  I can't believe that I grew up with videogames and PCs and stuff, and people my age say "I don't understand that Nintendo Playstation360!"

In a nicer world, people would attempt to understand things rather than take a religious-like stance those things.  Instead, people see "purpose" where there is none.  "Purpose" implies a human-like behvior, of which games have none.  It's a shame they, the detractors, don't realize they are taking a very important part of their own life, purpose or free will, and giving it up to something non-living and totally commercial.  If they focus their skills on what matters, like preventing wars and such, that fervor would be well-spent.
