For anyone that has this issue, if it will help, my support ticket # was 1026442145.
I told them I tried 2 different controllers, the one I purchased aftermarket (microsoft brand) works fine with the wireless headset - the one I got with the 360 in april'ish 2006 did not work. It would never take the same position in the ring of light as the controller - it would always jump away from it (if controller was on #1, headset would jump to #2).
They did not admit it was a bug with their software, hardware, or other - but I pursued them and told them the controller was working great so it wasn't the controllers issue. Plus I found more reports of my symptoms and in addition a youtube video detailing the EXACT same problem.
So, MS made things right in the end (after many hours on the phone, but that's the price of fighting city hall).
Hopefully anyone that is having issues has good luck as well. Don't be afraid to buy the headset and return it if you can't get it to work and they won't replace your controller (or promise a software update and acknowledge a flaw). The headset is awesome - the little wire and big boom for the mic are annoying as hell and once you are free of them you will be very pleased - at least I was.
