Xbox Price Drop

Everyone seems to be buzzing about a price drop for the 360.  While none of this is new (rumors have been circulating since last Oct .-Nov, as near as I can tell), it seems to be speeding up as:

  1. PS3 gains availability (easily found on shelves near me).
  2. Wii pressures Sony and Microsoft for the desireable "soft" gamer market.
  3. The 360 die-shrink should happen this spring.

It seems almost as if by releasing the PS3 at such a high price, Sony enabled Microsoft to make more money on the 360 because $400<$500-600.  Even if the 360 dropped in price tomorrow, I would say that many of those who have paid $400 for the 360 have gotten their money's worth. It's always been my stance that buying now and enjoying is better than waiting (which often puts me at odds with my wife).

Since I got my 360 for Christmas, I've probably played Oblivion for 40-50 hours.  Add to that Gears of War for all the missions on Co-op and some (often disasterous) online play.  A few dozen hours playing co-op Lego Star Wars and some Burnout Revenge with my son.  I also play a lot of Rainbow 6: Vegas, which has engrossed me for many hours online with folks from this site.  So my point is this, I've probably played almost 100 hours of games on the 360 in the past month (playing all night to swtich my schedule to nights helped).  If the Xbox dropped $50 in price tomorrow, would I have paid that extra 50 cents an hour for that fun?  Yes.  Now if they come out with a larger hard drive for a cheaper pirce, I will probably cry, but that is a different story...

Nice post English. I was thinking about buying Oblivion so I have a question for ya.. I'm addicted to multiplayer. I'm an avid sports & FPS gamer & have never played an RPG before. Do you think Oblivion is a good place to start me on the path of single-player gaming? -jas

I could see Microsoft sticking it to Sony by lowering 360 prices. And, you are right, Wii's cheapness has only aggravated Sony's strategy of premium pricing. That said, who knows what goes on in the mind of people who are responsible for these decisions.
