Currently I am taking care of my sick "Wee Girl". She is 10 weeks old and has her first cold. Not too bad, just a lot of tears and snot. Which, when I come to think of it is how I feel when I'm sick. So she decides to get sick the very week I decide I'm going to make an attempt at the 50 book challenge. I've heard of this from a friend of mine. 50 books: 1 year. I am going to take my daughter's birthday as my 1 year mark (Jan 2nd) and count what I've read since she was born. So far it's been:
Plutonium Blonde by John Zakour, and Lawrence Ganem. This book should come with instructions (take tounge, plant firmly in cheek). It's very funny and was done in the form of old pulp fiction. Private eye gets new toys is how best to describe it. Good, funny and a quick read.
The Blind Side: Michael Lewis: Same guy who did Moneyball. This was an eye opener. I'm from Canada and I am always shocked at how big college sports are in the US. This book is about the evolution of the left tackle in football and it chronicles the growth of a young underprivaliged black man into a huge high school football star, with the help of his adoptive white family. Interesting takes on the effects of poverty and race in sport as well.
SuperNanny by well, the Supernanny. It was a gift and was pretty good. It emphasizes what kids can't do, instead of what they can. i.e. a toddler has no concept of time, so if you say we are going in an hour, in an hour s/he is surprised and may not want to go. Anyway: I guess we will see how good the advice is when the wee girl is bigger.
Anansi Boys: Neil Gaiman. I liked Neverwhere better, but this was a decent read. Ordinary British guy meets long lost brother (who has special talents).
Chart Throb by Ben Elton: It's a fictional account of the behind the scenes of an Americal (or rather Pop) Idol type reality show. Funny, and you will never look at reality tv the same way.
OK: that's all I've read so far: 5 down, 45 to go, unless you count the riveting tale of "Mommy loves her Bunny, then it's 6 down, 44 to go.
Other than reading, taking care of a newborn, cleaning the house etc, I am also playing Oblivion when I can. Cause stealing stuff is fun. In some ways I empathise too much though. I actually feel bad if I kill anyone. Anyone else feel this way?
