As the hormones pulsed through our bodies, and we couldn’t think of anything BUT the opposite sex (and then men settle into the rest of their lives…), we all identified a celebrity out there that we could imagine ourselves in a relationship with. My early teenage years were spent looking forward to the trips to my grandmothers who happened to have Xanadu on VHS…that new fangled technology…and oh how I drooled over Olivia Newton-John.
/me buries his head in shame. Hey...give me a break...I was 11 for crying out loud!
Anyways, no time to mock me. There’s a new group of people out there on the internet that deserve that mockery more…two groups actually. The first are those people out there who have this delusion that they look like some celebrity. In most cases, there may be some slight resemblance, but then there’s something that is just so totally off that makes the person look more like a botched attempt at cloning than a celebrity look-a-like. “Look, it’s Naomi Watts…but…with only one eyebrow.” Or “Hey…is that Tom Cruise…but…when did he get a second chin?” You know the story.
Then there are the people who took the above aforementioned childhood obsession and held onto it like a life preserver. These are the people who turn into stalkers. They are so assured that a given celebrity has been put on this earth just for them that they obsess. I guess it turns out that there is a multi-step program for curing yourself of this affliction. The first step is understanding that you don’t have a snowball’s chance in Hell of getting with the rich and famous. Well, now there’s a website for those people who can only get through that first step, and then fall flat on their face. Basically, it's a dating site for those who THINK they look famous, and the people who want to date them.
/me makes the big “L” on his forehead just for these people.
I’m not saying that using the internet for dating is wrong. Far from it. It’s the latest revolution in the dating scene that technology has enabled. Plenty of solid relationships and marriages have spawned off of meetings on the curb of the internet superhighway. My sister is one of them, now married for 5 years, with a daughter and two more on the way (that’s right…twins in the oven). But for every successful pairing out there, there are 10 that are doomed, and this site is just CHOCKED full of them!
Anyways…just thought I’d share this internet train wreck in the making. Remember – there are stranger people out there than you. Take solace in that!
