Wow - suicide is selfish enough to add the element of taking others with you...I hope your neighbor gets the help he needs.

Falelorn - I know it's totally harsh. But the very definition of selfishness is caring about your own needs (or pain) over others. And there are few other things that a person can do that will irreparably hurt so many other people in the process. It forces friends and family to blame themselves, feel guilty, go through the pain of losing a loved one, and of course, somebody has to find the person...And don't think that selfish has to mean intentional...I don't think anyone commits suicide to be selfish.
