I'm getting myself in shape, or at least trimming some of those BMIs I've allowed to multiply. I been exercising almost daily for the past three weeks and my muscles and body are starting to deal with the new situation.
As mentioned in my previous blog, I've gotten to biking a ten (10!) mile route through town. Sometimes on the road, sometimes on the multipurpose path ('sidewalk' to us old timers) and sometimes over gravel, grass, and such. Through all this riding I've come to the conclusion that most drivers of engined vehicles are either blind, stupid or both.

Listen up drivers of cars, trucks, SUVs, and whatnots, when you see a cyclist on or near the road – use extra caution! Use your turn signals at intersections! Turn signals tell cyclists and your fellow motorists about your intentions. If a cyclist is doing a straight crossing we need to know if you are intending to turn. Do not try to turn before us at an intersection; you wouldn't try that with a mack truck, don't try it with a cyclist.
If you are unsure of what a cyclist is doing – wait a moment, then briefly hit your horn. A good cyclist will then let you know what s/he is planning, or let you go on ahead.
Share the road! If there is a good marked bicycle shoulder, a good cyclist will use it. Without a bicycle shoulder drivers have to share the road with cyclists! That means a driver will have to move over to another lane in order to pass, just like passing any other vehicle on out on the road. A cyclist has rights to use the full lane if s/he wishes, and even if s/he doesn't want to utilize that right, that does not mean a driver can use the remaining area of the lane.

One other thing to address, there are some idiot cyclists out there pedaling around oblivious to any rules, laws and/or common sense. The rules for a driver around a young (child/teenager) cyclist, oblivious cyclist (seemingly not paying attention) and/or idiot cyclists – use extra extra extra caution. Be prepared to stop and wait for whatever they are going to do or until they get out of the area that you will be driving. An idiot cyclist may be violating rules and/or laws, but you will be the one sitting in jail should you hit her/him.
