Shared on Mon, 08/27/2007 - 07:44It came up on us pretty quickly this year. My son didn't do any camps, but he spent a great deal of time with the grandparents travelling this summer. Last week all the school supplies came in from Staples. [I love the smell of cardboard, I don't know why]. This morning everything seemed to be going swimmingly, then he said he had a headache. Then he said his chest hurt. Then he almost burst into tears, he said he wanted to cry but couldn't.
My boy was nervous for the first time. I tried very hard not to laugh it off. I got out his wallet and told him he could take it to school [very cool black leather Harley Davidson wallet] and he could get a candy bar at lunch. "What if the lunch room is all different?" "What if I can't find my class?" "What if I don't like anyone?" I then, like an idiot, pointed out that his fly was down. I thought he was gonna have a heart attack.
So I took him into school a little early. I work for the school system, so we were able to wander around before they let the masses in. I showed him the lunch room - it's the same. I showed him his class - it is right next to the office and really easy to find. And low and behold, the little girl that lives next door is in his class! Yeah!.
We checked his zipper one more time, smoothed his cowlick for the 5th time and he walked into his class all smiles. I was totally forgotten. I am really proud of my boy. He endures a lot being my kid. I am not the most comforting or loving mom. I tend to try and make jokes to ease his worries. So today I think we both did really well.
Good luck to all of you guys for this next school year.
