Over the years we have used stinky sprays, soap, um, urine, and finally fences that, unfortunately, are not tall enough. We have read up on what to do, what to plant, etc. I can tell you that there is not one vegetable that deer don't like! Flowers, on the other hand, they stay away from some. And those are the only kind I have in my yard. Not all that safe if they are hungry enough, but I try. This year has been particularly bad cuz we are having a drought. D'oh, what's unusual about that? But the deer population has grown exponetially. At any given time there are 3-12 of the beasties visible from my front door. BOOM! Well, the bodies are rather large and hard to dispose of...... And the little critters! Possoms, raccoons, rabbits, squirrels, etc. They like our salad bar, too! They all get together like a committee meeting and plan how to demolish our garden. First the smaller ones chew holes in the fence. Oh yeh, it's just that plastic net stuff. Then the bigger ones chew a little more so they can squeeze thru. The deer have a gift for finding these little holes and making them even bigger. And, they can jump as high as 7-8 feet in the air, and our fences are only 5. Sooooo, the end of this story is, our garden has contributed to the growth and welfare of all of the wild animals in our area and we have gotten very little from it this year. Ahhh, my veggies.
