New Game Type

So I have been thinking about what game to play after I finish God Of War 2 this week.  I have always wanted to try a dungeon and dragons type of game.  Funny thing was I came home last Friday and my wife said that she wanted to try and play a pen and paper RP game.  She reasoned that in the next few months we will be getting our adopted child and she hoped that if she liked rping she could use it for home schooling.

So I went and researched a bit and decided to try D20 Modern.  I found an ebay auction for the core rules, modern expansion, and future expansion.  Thats about 70 bucks worth of books and I bought them for $13.  Amazingly the dude only lived 15 min from my house so I drove out there and gave him a 20 for letting me pickup and not charging me the $20 shipping and handleing he wanted.  I also bought a few funny sided dice at a local hobby shop.

Anyway the whole process looks pretty complicated and it looks like a lot of work.  I was sort of hoping I could just make a few military encounters and run her thru them, but I think she wants a more narrative campaign.  That seems a lot harder.  Lucky for me, I still have a bit of an imagination and I think I can come up with a story that will entertain her.  I think it won't be as much fun as playing tho.  I am wondering if I generate a character if I can still play a character along with her and DM at the same time.

So:

Anyone play and pnp rp games with the family?  with just the wife?  with a group?

do I stand a chance of doing an adventure with no outside help?  I never really played before so I don't really know how its supposed to work.

I think it would be cool if someone would make a podcast where they just played a game and I got to sit in and watch.

Feedback appreciated on this one...
