Health care: Cat vs Baby

Hey.

I read a thread on 2o2p that got me thinking. It mentioned overmedication of kids, and how doctors give kids prozac like candy. That got me thinking about my daughter (Erica) and my cat (Guiness) and their respective "doctor's" appoinments.  They are both in good health, they both have no issues, they were both in for a checkup: Erica for her 9mo, Guiness for her yearly.

My doctor is a great guy, let me start with that. On this day he was running late. With a 9 month old, that sucks. Anyway: wait half an hour, get in to see the doctor.  Barely said hello, didn't ask how we were doing, just off to the races. Yep: everything was checked, but some things were amiss.  The growth chart in the file is for a boy, he keeps saying he needs to get a new one (never happens).  I always feel rushed. I'm a first time Mom, and I have questions and concerns. They are probably nothing, but I would like to be heard.  On the other hand, there are some things I like about him: I asked about Vitamin D: instead of pretending he knows everything, he looks it up. He also remembered "something about fish and eggs." and shuffled through his journal, and there was an article by a pediatric allergist on introducing fish and eggs to wee babies.   I like that he goes to the source and not just from what he can remember.

Now for the Vet appointment. Dr. Keith asked about me first, and then about Erica. He wanted to know how the family was doing. Then he asked about Erica and Guiness and how they were getting along. He remembered that Guiness had a toy vet that looked like him.  My doctor can't remember which is Erica, me or the baby. Looked Guinnie up and down, checked her teeth. Guiness has teeth problems and we discussed a cleaning etc.  Also discussed giving Guin a deworming medication, cause even though she's an indoor cat there is new info saying that this may be good, esp. with new baby.  It was a much longer appoinment that addressed the whole family.

The difference between  the two: I pay a frickin sweet penny to take my cat to the vet, the doctor is public health care.  There is a debate in Canada: should we introduce some private health care. No one would go without, you would be able to "pay" the doctor with your health card, nothing out of pocket.

So: What is the health care system like in the US? When you pay to go to the doctor, do you get good service?

I am not even going to go into the Healthcare system here.....we can't afford so we can't go. I refuse to sit at a county hospital for 24-36 hours to be seen....if its an emergency we hit the ER, and only when its abousltely necessary. but IF you have a doctor....then I would say do not let them RUSH you. Make them slow down and talk to you...

I have a wonderful Doc for my kids, I have found though to get the doc to stay and talk, you really have to be assertive. Also, make a list of questions before you go to your appointment so that way you don't get flustered and/or forget them. If you let your doc know you have some questions they are obligated as your child's doc to answer them, if they don't think they have time to answer them then you need to move on to another doc because that is part of being a doc! Good luck, and don't let him intimidate you!

As you said, you are a first-time mom and you have a whole lot of questions. Your pediatrician should be aware of this and should act accordingly. If you have to, put your foot down and say "Look, I've got some questions and I'd really appreciate some answers" and then don't let him leave until you get them. Some offices have a nurse or nurse practitioner that is available for you to call if you've got basic questions and concerns, be sure and utilize it if it is available. You may think you are being unreasonable or overbearing, but this is your little girl we are talking about here. She's kind of important :)

I really don't think this is a private vs. socialized healthcare thing. I think it's more of a personality thing with your doctor. I'm Canadian, as well as a first-time parent, and our doctor is great. She always answers any questions that we have and always has time for us. My suggestion would be to be a bit more aggressive and not leave until you get all of your answers.

The doctors I go to are a hit and miss. Sometimes I go to a good place where the doctors care and then some doctors made me wish i had my old doctor back.

I was going to say the same as ATC. You have good ones and bad doctors. Find one that you like and fits your needs, if you can.

ive found the doctors out here in the US like to play "pass the buck" alot. I go to the regular doctor, drop the copay down, tell him about my tummy ache, he gives me a slip that says I am allowed to see a stomach specialist and tells me that he can help me. But first i need to go to the lab to get blood work, so he gives me another slip that says im allowed to go to the lab to get blood work. Then the insurance that I pay alot of money for rejects the bills saying the doctors filled the forms out wrong, the doctors send me bills saying the insurance turned it down and I have to pay out of pocket and then im stuck in a 6 month battle between the 3 of us, in which time i cant go back to the doctor because I owe him money. So if i need to find a doctor i need to go to a new one, who has to have my medical records faxed over from the old doctor and the old doctor drags his ass on the faxing for a week or two because I owe him money..

If I could, I would switch doctors. It sounds like that office is just too rushed. As an experienced mother I can't tell you the times that extra question or two sometimes seemingly insignificant, has helped considerably.

Just thought of something else. We go to a doctor that sees the whole family. That helps considerably also.

I think it's awesome that Canadians can go to one doctor for both the cat and the baby. Dr Keith sounds like one heck of a knowledgeable guy.

Yeah, I think it is doctor not so much as the health care system. My doctor was great the first time around. Yes he was always busy, and often late but he sat down shook my hand asked how mom was doing if I had any questions and always had a hand-out for whatever age group my daughter was in. It was nice being able to ask questions and take my time. We had to switch doctors once when my daughter was little and the doctor I chose under the plan was completely different. In a hurry, made me fell like an idiot when I asked questions...as if he didn't have time for this nonsense. Course now with kid number two, I've learned not ask. Parenting has become "on-the-job" training program. :)

My kids doc is AMAZING. He is native to Zimbabwe [sp?] and does a lot for the community. He stopped taking on new patients except by referral which is how I got my daughter in with him as well. He is not a fancy smancy doc either. His patient base is most the medicade moms, and it is great to see people like me that started needing the states help and now have great jobs and their own insurance. He takes his time, gives out lots of free samples. My doctor on the other hand SUCKS.
