A group of vampires discover the town and make it their new hunting ground. A chance for them to feed unhindered and without fear of sunlight. And feed they do.
I will say this to get it out of the way....its not exactly like the comic book. So hardcore elitest fans (like myself) will be left a little dissapointed, though still pretty happy with the outcome of the film. It's a pretty good movie. At least to me worth the cost of admission.
Josh Hartnett does a really damn good job as the sheriff of the town. He seems young and inexperienced at first, but as the movie moves on you see how the towns people look to him for support and leadership. They know he's good at what he does.
During the final day of light, a stranger comes calling to the town. The stranger makes an appearance at the local diner in the town, asking for a bowl of raw meat and some whiskey. He starts trouble when his order can't be filled and the Sheriff has to step in and takes him into custody. Once put in a holding cell, the stranger starts going on about a storm coming that no one will survive. But the Sheriff is more distracted with the seemingly random acts of vandalism going on throughout the town. Dead dogs, stolen cellphones found burned, power outages. They were about to go into lockdown for the full month of darkness....there was alot to do. One crackpot in a cell wasn't going to keep him from focussing on his job.
But then the bodies started popping up.
From there the film jumps into a gore fest. Lots of blood and dismemberment. If you're not into gore...don't bother. There is lots of it.
For those that read the graphic novel, alot is very similar....but there are some MAJOR differences. The vampires don't talk at all except for their leader...and he doesn't speak english. I believe the only english he spoke was "No God..." The rest was in a vampiric language.
Overall I'm very pleased with the film. It was very entertaining and left me with a smile on my face. But I will admit I was a bit disappointed in the few things that were different from the book. All of the vampires that were in the town from the start of the movie are it. No Elder vampire shows up to take over and clean up. They never went into the back story of how the vampires discovered the town and setting up the raid. And the main character Eben and his wife's relationship was a lot different than in the book.
I won't spoil any more. I say go check it out. It may not be the best movie ever, but what it does do it at least does right. And its a damn good gore/horror flick.
I'd give it a 3.75 out of 5.
