All - is too broad Art - is too subjective Higher Purpose - is too vague I guess my answer would be; False. :)

I vote you take Hilsie's as True. Then the disparity between Trues and Falses won't be as bad.

I'm voting true. I'll back-door the question by saying if it neither the subject's essence nor the artists intent doesn't consist of higher purpose, then it's not art. And making people happy is the highest purpose of all. True is losing badly. The tally stands at: True: 4 False: 9

True, by definition. "Art" is a form of extraordinary expression (picture, literature, etc...), which elicits a response (discussion, feeling, etc.. = thought = higher purpose). By calling art, "art," this encompasses ALL art. "All art has high purpose" is true by semantics.

All art is Subjective, but it does serve a higher purpose. If you look into history, art, is a constant that is the window in which a society is viewed. We know much about early man from "primative" cave art. People try to read into many of the warlord of history by disecting their style, or even the art that they have created. How many of you have the famous piece: "Your child's hand in clay... for my Mother" stuffed in some attic trunk? How we decorate our homes is art, because art is expression. And if you like Shakespeare or Rush, and all the world is your stage.... how you dress and act is performance art. Maybe you are religious, and the human experience is God's canvas and we are the ultimate expression of a higher being. From others comments you can see that art has served its higher purpose as it has drawn us into the introspection and debate. Also, if you see or talk to my parents, tell them I used my degree for something other than art on a wall. Now I have to go and find some Advil....

True. Just because some art may not have high purpose for me or you, doesn't mean that same art has no high purpose for someone else.

I'll venture that any statement with an absolute -- "All" -- cannot be true.

Well there had to be some purpose or it wouldn't have been made. Either for fun, money, sex, fame or just because you're bored, it still had a purpose.
